The Story
It all began one sleep deprived morning.
I was exhausted after an early morning course and was headed to my favorite napping spot, “The Airport Lounge” (coined by students), located in Warren Hall. To my astonishment, my beloved napping space had since been demolished to make room for an art gallery. I stood there for a moment, wondering how I would ever survive my sleep deprived mornings.
Flash forward one year. Once again sleep deprived, I was sitting in my sleep research laboratory trying to catch a minute of shut eye by using my backpack as a pillow; desperately hoping no fellow researchers would disrupt the peace for at least twenty minutes. As I fiddled with my backpack trying to make a make-shift pillow, I realized that my efforts were pointless. There was no way that I would be able to fall asleep in this uncomfortable manner. My frustration grew and it was in that moment I decided that there must be a way to create a designated student napping space on campus. It has been my goal since then to create a student napping center and to revive the sleep deprived JMU students!
Goals of the Nap Nook
The goal of the JMU Nap Nook is to expose students to the wide range of benefits associated with a 20-30 min nap. By only allowing reservations for short naps (< 40 min) we hope that students will feel the benefits of a power nap without experiencing the sluggish feelings associated with longer naps. We hope that this will promote students to take naps when sleep deprived, instead of resorting to caffeine and stimulant use.
Goals of the “Revive the Sleep Deprived” Campaign
The main goal of the Revive the Sleep Deprived campaign is to increase student education regarding sleep hygiene and sleep disorders, as well as to promote awareness as to the dangers associated with sleep deprivation. We believe that it’s important to extinguish the main stream misconceptions that sleep deprivation is an unavoidable part of college or that daytime napping is indicative of laziness.
Through our campus-wide health campaign and university partnerships, we plan to reverse the stimga associated with napping and promote healthy sleep hygiene by increased faculty and student sleep education. By localizing useful sleep education materials to our website, we hope that students will use the resources provided to improve their sleep hygiene and to seek medical advice regarding sleep disorders. Overall, we hope that the efforts of the “Revive the Sleep Deprived” campaign will result in happier, healthier and more productive students.
